This Privacy Policy outlines how we collect, use, store, and protect information when you use the BigButton Guardian application ("App") to monitor and assist seniors using the companion BigButton Dial app.
1. Information We Collect
To provide a secure and reliable remote caregiving experience, BigButton Guardian receives and processes specific telemetry and alert data originating from the senior's device. This data is essential for the App's core functionality.
A. Device Telemetry & Health Metrics
- Hardware Status: Battery percentage and active charging status.
- Network Connectivity: Wi-Fi and Cellular signal strength.
- Audio Settings: Device ringer volume levels and mute status.
- Activity Timestamps: First and last active usage timestamps to monitor general device interaction and detect potential inactivity.
B. Medication Adherence Data
- Schedules and Logs: We collect the scheduled times and the exact user-acknowledged times (taken, missed, or overdue) for daily medication periods (Morning, Afternoon, Evening).
C. Emergency and Location Data
- Geographic Coordinates (GPS): During emergency escalations (such as an SOS button press, fall detection, or missed medication alerts), the app receives latitude and longitude coordinates along with a location timestamp to assess the freshness of the data. Location data is only accessed and transmitted during these specific emergency or alert conditions.
D. System and App Identifiers
- Device Pairing Codes: We utilize dynamically generated UUIDs for the Caregiver ID and backend-resolved Senior IDs. Pairing is secured through a 6-digit numeric PIN handshake.
- Push Notification Tokens: Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) tokens are collected to securely route real-time alerts to your device.
2. How We Use Your Information
The information collected is used exclusively for providing remote caregiving capabilities. Specifically, we use the data to:
- Deliver real-time push notifications for emergencies, low battery warnings, device inactivity, and missed medications.
- Display a comprehensive dashboard illustrating the senior device's hardware status and recent activity.
- Maintain a historical log of medication adherence and alert history for caregiver review.
- Enable secure mapping intents so you can quickly locate the senior during an emergency alert.
3. Data Retention and Storage
We believe in minimizing data storage to protect privacy. BigButton Guardian employs strict, automated data pruning policies:
- Alert History: All emergency and system alerts are subject to a strict 72-hour Time-To-Live (TTL). Any alert older than 72 hours is automatically and permanently deleted from local storage. The system also enforces a hard cap of 15 maximum saved alerts.
- Medication History: Medication records are retained locally based on your custom retention settings (defaulting to 7 days, up to a maximum of 31 days). Older records are automatically pruned.
- Cloud Backup Prevention: To prevent sensitive historical alerts and health data from persisting indefinitely, Android OS cloud backups are explicitly disabled for the Guardian app.
4. Permissions Requested
To function correctly, BigButton Guardian requires the following Android device permissions:
- Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS): Required to receive immediate, high-priority push notifications for emergencies and escalations.
- Internet: Required to communicate securely with our backend infrastructure and synchronize telemetry.
5. Data Security
We implement robust security measures to protect the data transmitted between the senior's device, our servers, and your Guardian app:
- Secure API Communication: Network requests are protected using native, XOR-decrypted API keys embedded at the C++ level to prevent interception and abuse.
- Strict Data Extraction Rules: The application enforces Android 12+ strict data extraction rules, blocking unauthorized local access to your sensitive database files.
- No Third-Party Selling: We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data, telemetry, or location information to any third parties or advertisers.
